The Wedding of the Decade

Ebony, Sept. 1992

by: Lynn Norment

It was the wedding of the decade, the most talked-about celebrity event of the year, and the most coveted invitation of the summer social season.

On a smoldering July afternoon, superstar singer Whitney Houston and pop-soul star Bobby Brown exchanged wedding vows in a private ceremony on Houston’s posh New Jersey estate. Witnessed by a small gathering of family and close friends, including dozens of celebrities and entertainment tycoons, the talented stars were pronounced husband and wife in a romantic garden gazebo adorned with 8,000 roses and hundreds of orchids, all in lavender and purple, the Grammy Award-winning bride’s favorite colors.

Radiant in a form-fitting beaded, Lyon lace gown with a four-foot train and a beaded headpiece with floor-length beaded tulle, a teary-eyed Houston was escorted down the carpeted aisle–which led from a rear entrance of her $10 million home–by her father, John Houston, as a string orchestra played Mendelssohn’s wedding march.

Houston’s close friend, the Rev. Marvin Winans, a member of the popular gospel singing family, officiated at the 35-minute, double-ring ceremony. BeBe Winans sang “Enough Said,” a song he composed especially for the couple a few days before the wedding. His brother, Daniel Winans, sang a song he had written for Houston years before he met her. Both songs were so touching that the bride and groom and many in the audience were moved to tears. Throughout the ceremony, the maid of honor, Robyn Crawford, had
to blot tears from the bride’s eyes and cheeks.

Diane Johnson, who has been designing Houston’s stage and personal wardrobes for years, co-designed the bridal gown with Marc Bouwer. “Whitney wanted to keep it a very simple design,” says Johnson, who runs a boutique in East Orange, N.J., Houston’s hometown. “The Lyon lace, imported from France, is the finest lace in the world. The lace made the dress.” In addition, Johnson designed the groom’s white double-breasted silk tuxedo and the bridesmaids’ purple silk floor-length gowns with trains.

Among the attendants were two of Houston closest pals, recording artists Priscilla (CeCe) Winans Love and Perry (Pebbles) Reid. The best man, Brown’s brother, Tommy, and the groomsmen, who included Houston’s brother, Michael, were all attired in Johnson-designed purple tuxedos with matching purple alligator shoes that were custom-made in Italy. The four flower girls and three ring bearers were adorable in white and lavender.

“Purple is Whitney’s favorite color,” Johnson emphasizes. “She wanted everything in purple and lavender and white. She even decorates her Christmas tree in purple.”

The couple exchanged identical platinum wedding bands. Hers had the words “Love, Bobby” in cut-out script, while his read, “Love, Whitney.”

After Brown enthusiastically declared, “I do!!” and the couple were pronounced husband and wife, the guests were awed as seven white doves were released outside the gazebo. The couple then sealed the union with a long, passionate kiss during which Brown literally lifted his bride into the air as the jubilant guests applauded.

Afterwards, the newlyweds entertained 800 guests at a lavish wedding reception hosted in a huge air-conditioned, carpeted ballroom tent constructed on Houston’s lawn above the swimming pool. Lavender and purple fabrics draped the ceiling and lined the tent, giving the illusion of an Arabian palace. Some 15,000 lilac and purple dendrobium orchids decorated support columns, entrances and exits. Each of the 84 tables in the dining tent, one of seven set up for the affair, was clothed and beribboned in three layers of lavender ribbed satin that highlighted the elaborate centerpieces. The floral arrangements included blue roses and cattleya orchids in shades of lavender and purple. Candles in hurricane glasses created a warm, romantic glow that contrasted with the elaborate and effective light and sound show. Guests identified their tables by silver-trimmed white cards with phrases, such as “Lover For Life” and “Love Obsession,” scripted in lavender.

The sit-down dinner was opulent but relaxed, for in between courses the formally attired guests boogied on the purple and white oval dance floor to music programmed by David Cole and Robert Clivilles of C + C Music Factory. The menu included chilled peach soup, grilled chateaubriand, jersey chicken breasts stuffed with collard greens, and grilled herbed vegetables. For dessert, there were fresh berries, an assortment of chocolate delicacies,
as well as slices of the six-tiered, 18-layered wedding cake. The architectural confection, decorated with hand-molded lavender sugar violets, had alternating layers of strawberry lemon mousse and banana cake. An army of waiters kept glasses filled with Dom Perignon and Cristal champagne throughout the evening.

The wealthy couple had requested that in lieu of gifts, guests make donations to the Whitney Houston Foundation For Children.

Among the nuptial guests were some of the biggest and wealthiest names in show business and beyond, including Clive Davis, president of Houston’s Arista Records, and Al Teller, president of Brown’s MCA Records. Also enjoying the festivities were Phylicia Rashad, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick (Whitney’s cousin), Jasmine Guy, Antonio (L.A.) Reid, Kenneth (Babyface) Edmonds, Donald Trump, Dick Clark, Charles Dutton and his wife, Debbi Morgan, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Blair Underwood, Clifton Davis, Teddy Riley, Isiah Thomas, Gloria Estefan, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and his mother-manager, Pamela Warner, Meli’sa Morgan, Milira, Heavy D., Valerie Simpson, Freddie Jackson, and Bobby Brown’s former New Edition cohorts, Johnny Gill, Ricky Bell,
Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe.

Charlene Wittstock and Prince Albert Wed

Charlene Wittstock put fears that she was going to be a runaway bride to rest for good as she wed Prince Albert of Monaco in a religious ceremony on Saturday.

A day after their civil ceremony, the Rhodesian-born Olympian walked down the aisle on the arm of her father in a dazzling off-white silk Duchesse Giorgio Armani Privé dress with a long train and long veil made from off-white silk tulle. The dress was embellished with flowery embroidery, crafted with stones in gold shades, along with Swarovski crystals and mother of pearl teardrops in white and gold hues.

Albert was wearing the cream-colored summer uniform of the palace guards, as well as three medals, including the French Legion of Honor and the Order of the Grimaldi.

As he slipped the ring on his bride’s finger, the prince winked and she giggled, looking relaxed. The two exchanged vows in French, which Wittstock studied intensively for a month at the Institut de Francais.

Because of the couple’s large guest list, the ceremony took place in the courtyard of the prince’s royal palace, rather than the cathedral where his parents Rainer III and Grace Kelly exchanged vows in 1956.

After the couple walked outside of the palace, they got into their Lexus hybrid and were driven to the tiny St. Devote chapel where, according to tradition, the princess leaves her wedding bouquet. It was here that Charlene lost her composure and began weeping briefly – as if she were overcome by the heat and emotion.

“It was one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve ever seen,” Gildo Pastor, 44, a longtime friend of Albert and a member of one of the most prominent families in Monaco told PEOPLE. “They have a wonderful future ahead of them.”

Becoming a Princess

For the ceremony, Wittstock, 33, wore a dress designed by Giorgio Armani, although her father, Michael Wittstock, tells Paris-Match magazine that Charlene wasn’t always fashion conscious.

“I’ve seen her turn into a princess there,” he said of her time in Monaco. “Before, she was jogging all the time. Now, she’s acquired a taste for fashion and become a beautiful woman.”

Wittstock grew up in Zimbabwe and spent most of her childhood pursuing her Olympic swimming career and playing with animals. “We’d have weekends by the side of the river Gwai. There were wild animals, elephants, giraffes,” says her father, a Johannesburg-based Xerox executive. “Charlene would go riding. She was a real tomboy. Always running everywhere; always covered with dust and dirt.”

Sounds like she’ll be right at home when the couple departs for their honeymoon in South Africa.

MONACO — Monaco’s reigning prince, Albert II, wed Charlene Wittstock of South Africa on Friday in a long-awaited civil ceremony that transformed the one-time Olympic swimmer into the Princess of Monaco.

Wittstock succeeds Hollywood beauty Grace Kelly, who wed Albert’s father, Prince Rainier III in 1956, had three children with him but died in a car accident in 1982.

Residents of the principality on the Riviera swarmed the plaza outside the palace where the ceremony took place, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds during the first of two days of royal wedding events.

Wittstock wore a silken blue jacket with ankle-length pants, an outfit that famed fashion house Chanel created for the civil ceremony, which precedes Saturday’s elaborate religious wedding and star-studded wedding dinner gala.

When asked if they take each other in marriage, both quietly responded “Oui.” The marriage became official — and Wittstock became a princess — when Philippe Narmino, president of Monaco’s Council of State, pronounced “I declare you united by the bonds of marriage.”

The royal couple signed the marriage register with a specially created pen in gold and precious stones and adorned with their monogram made by German luxury penmaker Montblanc.

Although Albert, 53, was seen for decades as one of Europe’s most eligible bachelors, he had long resisted marriage. Many in Monaco — known the world over for its lax tax laws and glamorous casinos — feared he might never tie the knot.

Monaco’s 7,618 citizens and their partners were invited to post-ceremony cocktails on the square Friday, to be followed by a concert by French composer Jean Michel Jarre and a laser light show.

With her bright blue eyes and delicate features, Wittstock has often been compared to Kelly, an American movie star known for her iconic fashion sense.

Friday’s wedding was the first for both Wittstock and Albert, although the soft-spoken prince has acknowledged fathering two children out of wedlock.

Rumors raged over the past few days that a third illegitimate child had recently surfaced and that development allegedly prompted Wittstock to try to call off the wedding at the last minute and return to South Africa.

The palace dismissed the stories as “ugly rumors” born out of jealousy. Speaking earlier this week on Monaco-Info TV, a top aide to the prince said the couple were “affected” by the rumors but were concentrating on last-minute preparations.

Still, the tensions were evident when Wittstock talked in a TV interview before the wedding about wanting to have her own children.

“I love children and have always wanted to have children of my own,” she said on BFM television, sitting next to Albert with a close-lipped, tense smile. “We’ll see in the next couple of months or years.”

Wittstock also joked that she would bring South African barbecue traditions to Monaco.

The guest list for Saturday’s festivities included the kings of Spain, Sweden, Lesotho and Belgium, the presidents of France, Iceland, Ireland, Lebanon, Malta, Germany and Hungary, France’s richest man, celebrated opera singers, top models and race car divers.

The Catholic ceremony will also take place in the palace, followed by a gala dinner by three-time triple-starred Michelin chef Alain Ducasse. Besides the Champagne and the South African wines, everything served at the sumptuous buffet is being sourced in a 10-kilometer (6-mile) radius from Monaco, Ducasse told The Associated Press in an interview.

More than 1,000 journalists from around the world have been accredited for the festivities, which kicked off late Thursday with a free concert by the legendary Los Angeles band The Eagles.

The prince and Wittstock attended the show, he in a dark suit, she wearing a strapless black pantsuit.

Wittstock was born in Zimbabwe, but moved to neighboring South Africa as a child and swam for that country at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Albert met Wittstock during a 2000 swimming competition in Monaco. Wittstock then began appearing regularly at social events and moved to Monaco in 2006.

Albert has been an International Olympic Committee member since 1985 and competed in five Winter Olympics as part of Monaco’s bobsled team.
